Why I Started Reading eBooks
For years, I considered myself a traditional book lover. I relished the scent of paper, the rustle of pages, and the comforting weight of a novel in my hands. My shelves were, and are still, crammed with books, each with its own story and sentimental value. I never thought I’d be swayed by digital alternatives—until I finally gave eBooks a try. And once I did, I discovered a new kind of reading freedom I hadn’t expected.
My journey into eBooks began out of necessity. I was travelling and couldn’t keep lugging heavy paperbacks around. Packing two or three books for a trip didn’t make sense when space was tight. I decided to download a reading app on my tablet—just as a backup, I told myself. But within a few pages of my first eBook, I was hooked.
Convenience was the first thing that struck me. I could carry an entire library in my bag without the bulk. Whether I was waiting at a doctor’s appointment, away from home, or relaxing in the park, I had instant access to my books. No more worrying about bent covers or leaving a beloved novel behind by accident.
The customisation options also appealed to me. I could adjust the font size, background lighting, and even switch to dark mode for night reading. This made a big difference. I could read comfortably for longer periods, and I didn’t need to keep a reading light on at night.
Another surprising benefit was the affordability. eBooks usually cost less than physical copies, and many classics are completely free. I found myself reading genres I might not have tried otherwise, simply because they were accessible and inexpensive. With just a tap, I could sample a new book or buy one instantly—no need to wait for shipping or visit a book shop.
Of course, I still love the feel of a real book, and I’ll always keep a collection of my favourites on my shelves. But eBooks have become a practical, flexible part of my life. They’ve encouraged me to read more frequently and explore more widely.
Starting to read eBooks didn’t replace my love for traditional books—it expanded it. It’s not about choosing one over the other. It’s about having options that fit different moments and moods. And for me, that’s made all the difference.
